Want to ace the new (revised) GRE?
The overall testing time for the computer-based GRE® revised General Test is about three hours and 45 minutes. There are six sections with a 10-minute break following the third section.
The new GRE includes major changes to question types.
For example, the analytical writing questions will become more focused, but you will still have an analyze-the-argument essay and a perspective-on-an-issue essay.
For the issue essay, you will be asked to express to what extent you agree or disagree with a given statement or recommendation, and to demonstrate that you think through the consequences of your position.
For the argument essay, you will be asked to write regarding what assumptions the author makes in a given argument, or what evidence would make his argument stronger.
On the verbal reasoning section, the question types have undergone a major change. Also, antonyms and analogies has been completely taken out from the test. Test takers will now face reading comprehension questions in which you must select more than one answer choice for a given question, and other reading comprehension questions which require you to click on a sentence in the passage which answers the question (called “select-in-passage” questions). Text completionquestions are also expanded (both 2-blank and 3-blank text completions), and regular sentence completion questions have been replaced with “sentence equivalence” questions, in which you must pick more than one answer choice that would produce equivalent sentences, given the blanks in the sentence.
Math questions will undergo the least amount of change, and there is no indication that the math concepts you need to know will increase. There are, however, a few changes to the question types.Multiple choice questions, quantitative comparison questions, data interpretation, and numeric entry questions will remain on the test, but some multiple choice questions will have the directions to “select one or more answer choices” that answer the question.
Apart from the changes in question types, another major change in the GRE test is in the test taking experience Users will now have access to an on-screen calculator.
Users will also have the ability to skip around within a section to go back and change their answer if they decide to change it. Users can also mark items for “review” as they are taking the test in order to return to them later.
A third major change to the GRE is that it’s scoring scale is undergoing a major change. Your score will no longer be on a scale of 800 for each section. Instead, both the verbal reasoning and the quantitative reasoning will be scored on a scale of 130-170. With the old scoring, a different of 10 or 20 points looks big, but in actuality are very similar scores. With the new scoring, a difference of 1 or 2 points actually looks minor, when in fact it is minor.
If you are interested, though, you can find complete information regarding the revised GRE from the test maker on the official revised GRE info page. Structure of the Computer-based Test
